Made Our Own Sun

Today is another classic Northwest day fraught with rain. Inside we have created a bright and cheery environment for our imaginations.

My youngest has a Flower Fairy party to go to next weekend for our dear little friend who is turning 5. They requested all children dress up as flowers. My 4 year old wanted to go as a daffodil.

So I looked in my fabric stash and got to sewing!

Afterwards, we decided to work on our Batik projects.

Now, that’s better! Rain rain-we made our own sun today.

*crickets chirping*

OK. Well, we went to Chuck E Cheese for a birthday party today. I think the word I am looking for to describe it was Overwhelming.

Loud lights, Loud noises, Loud games, Loud Music, Loud children. OOooooowwwww.

My ears and eyes! (Oh and I totally smashed my thumb playing Whack-a-mole)

The kids did enjoy themselves, but it was really hard to tell. There wasn’t the intimacy of an at-home party, or even a smaller party somewhere a bit, um, well, quieter. Maybe that is me and my old-fashioned sense, but I actually like to see the birthday child’s face light up when opening his/her gifts. I like the “thank-you’s” that come when you can actually hear each other.

Birthdays are personal. Everyone celebrates them differently. I was happy to be a part of this little friend’s celebration. Now, though, I totally require silence for a few hours.

*rocking in corner hugging knees*

The upside: no mess for Mom to clean up, and that was the entertainment for the day.

I guess I did have something nice to say.

I Wake To

Over these 37 years of my life, I have been woken up in a variety of ways. From reluctantly rolling out to springing with boundless energy (only as a child I assure you) I greeted the new day in a new way in every day of every decade.

Now I find my mornings are filled with this little person (who seems to always have boundless energy) coming in to wake me up. She talks with my feet and cuddles them, and then “dresses” them in their socks. She asks what they need and pets them until they are moving at her speed. She also talks with my hands, which she calls “Spiders”. She asks them to tickle her head and rest on her lap~all the while, giving my eyes a chance to rest. This morning she added a new component to this routine where she bounces on my legs singing “Little Peppermint was on a horse, Told her not to fall off, then she went BUMP“. On the BUMP part, she jumped and rolled onto the bed laughing, eager to do it all again.

By far, over these many years, this is my favorite way to greet the day.

That~ and when my older daughter used to make “armpit soup“… But that’s a story for another time.

How do you wake up?
